Introduction to Gender Diversity & Autism
Adult Webinar Series: 16 years +
Trans and gender diverse people have always existed however what has changed is our culture and our openness to discussing gender and viewing it with more nuance than we have previously.
There is a very strong relationship between autism and trangender identities. Research undertaken in 2020 at the University of Cambridge in the UK, found that Autistic people are three-to-six times more likely not to identify with the sex they were assigned to at birth than non-autistic people.
A 2018 Australian study found that 22.5% of transgender adolescents had a diagnosis of autism, compared to 2.5% of all Australians.
Transgender people also appear more likely to have undiagnosed autism as a study has found that transgender and gender-diverse individuals scored significantly higher on self-report measures of autistic traits compared with cisgender individuals.
We know that trans and gender diverse people are far more likely than the cisgender population to experience poor mental health, however, this risk reduces when people around them are kind and respectful of their identities.
